The project is the conversion of an existing machine hall into the new art and architecture school for Ghent University. Situated along the canal at a strategic location, what was once a forgotten backside turns into a main address, activated by a sequence of terracing public spaces that lead from the canal to the street two levels above. The building urbanistically connects in section what was previously disconnected.

Beyond the specific technical and programmatic requirements, the building embodies the aspirations of the school promoting a culture of exchange and experimentation. Taking advantage of the impressive halls and structure of the existing building, including the Vierendeel beams, the formerly hermetic zones are opened and connected across a series of plateaus to offer a collection of distinctive spaces. Together they present a broad spectrum of possibilities, from small to large scale, without strictly prescribing uses.

The new roof—a lightweight system perched on the existing structure —unites the different programs, not only providing the additional area needed but also giving the school a new identity while preserving the character of the original industrial building. New vertical connections become features, places to scan and catch the ongoing activities, binding the plateaus into a non-hierarchical system for formal and informal exchange.
